Petroquimica

In 2006, just over 17m tonnes of LDPE were consumed globally with consultants predicting a growth in consumption of around 2%/year. Between the mid-1990s and 2004, little new LDPE capacity has been added but since then a number of projects are underway or have been completed in Europe, the Middle East and China.

Future growth in the US LDPE market is predicted to be small at 1%/year to 2009, according to ICIS Chemical Business Americas (ICBA). Demand is expected to increase from 2.76m tonnes in 2005 to 2.87m tonnes in 2009. Exports in 2005 were 737,000 tonnes while imports were 185,000 tonnes.

However, a study of the US plastic film industry by industry researchers Freedonia is much more bullish. It predicts LDPE film demand to rise 2.8%/year to 2010 based on its competitive cost structure, versatility and opportunities in areas such as produce and snack packaging, stretch and shrink wrap, and trash bags.
...
In western Europe, market growth has been stagnant although growth of up to 3-4%/year has been seen in central and eastern Europe. The trade association Plastics Europe reported that production of LDPE in Europe (EU15 and Norway, Switzerland, Malta and Cyprus) fell from 4.57m tonnes in 2005 to 4.43m tonnes in 2006. Demand data is not reported.
....
Much new investment is planned in the Middle East with most of the new production targeted at Asian markets, particularly China, although some product could be sent to Europe. Projects are underway in Iran, Saudi Arabia and Qatar that could result in 1.78m tonnes/year capacity being added in the 2007-2012 period, according to chemical consultants Nexant ChemSystems.

While polyethylene demand in China has been growing strongly, the LDPE market has been slowing, partly due to substitution by LLDPE. Nevertheless, Townsend Polymer Services is predicting average growth of 5.6%/year that will result in consumption rising from 2.78m tonnes in 2005 to 3.45m tonnes in 2009.
